Age 1 to 2 Visits - What to Expect During Your Appointment

Dental visits are an important part of oral health, as they help to detect dental problems long before they become serious. While it might not look like it, dental visits are important for children as well. At Smile Shoppe Pediatric Dentistry, we believe in providing dental care to your child as soon as they get their teeth. For this reason, we offer specialized dental care for age 1 to 2 visits, the period during which most children develop their first teeth.

First Dental Visit

One of the things you will have to decide as a parent is when to schedule your first dental visit. The recommended time for this visit is as soon as the first tooth emerges, which can be anywhere between six months and one year. However, some parents prefer to wait a bit longer for the first visit. In such a case, it would fall between the 1st and 2nd year. Such a visit would be similar to any other first visit before age 1. However, due to the delay, you can expect a bit more examination – to help detect or prevent dental problems.

Subsequent Dental Visits

Scheduling dental visits early – even before 12 months – is a great idea. However, to ensure that your child’s oral health remains optimal, it is important to schedule regular appointments after the first - which is where the age 1 to 2 visits would come in.

Importance of Age 1 to 2 Visits

Between the ages 1 and 2, children are developing their baby teeth, which end up falling off after some time. Due to this, some people might consider dental visits unimportant. However, this is further from the truth, as age 1 to 2 visit has an important role in dental health. Below is a look at some of their benefits.
•  They set the pace of your child’s dental health. People are more likely to adopt lasting dental care habits if they get used to them from an early age. Therefore, scheduling dental visits for your child as early as between the age of 1 and 2 years can help to teach them the importance of dental visits, even in their adult years.
•  They help to promote strong and healthy teeth. Age 1 to 2 visits occur during the period where teeth are emerging. The type of dental care received at this stage is thus very important as it sets the foundation for future dental health.
•  They help to avert future dental problems. Untreated dental problems that occur at a young age can grow to become serious in later years. For example, untreated tooth decay, even on baby teeth, can lead to other problems such as infection, tooth decay, and or cavities.

Making Age 1 and 2 Visits a Pleasant Experience

Early dental visits for most children can be frightening since they do not know what to expect. If the anxiety is not addressed, it can grow and become serious in later years – even in adulthood. For this reason, you should take steps to ensure that your child has a pleasant age 1 and 2 visits, something that will go a long way in ensuring they have pleasant future visits. Some of how you can make these visits fun and enjoyable include:
•  Explaining what to expect through childrens books about dental visits.
•  Using positive language and actions when talking about visits.
•  Positive reinforcement after the visits.
