The First Visit

When To See A Pediatric Dentist

Every child should see a pediatric dentist by their first birthday according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. During the first visit, we can establish a relationship with you and your child. Our goal is to form a bond with your child to make each visit pleasant and comfortable. Before your appointment, you can prepare your child by letting him or her know that we are there to help. If you have questions at any time, feel free to ask!

During your first visit with us, we hope to meet, and often exceed, your expectations. We encourage you and any siblings to accompany your child to the examination area. This allows us to meet your family and discuss any findings and information directly with you.

What To Expect

We will address all emergency problems first. If your child is experiencing any pain, our first priority will be to make them comfortable. If your child has no specific problem that requires immediate attention, we will begin a routine dental examination.

During the exam, we will closely inspect your child’s mouth, including their cheeks, lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, tonsils, and palates. We also check the head, teeth and gums for proper development. Next, we will thoroughly clean your child’s teeth and gums, provide a topical fluoride treatment, and take x-rays as needed. In addition, we will determine if any habits such as thumb-sucking or lip biting are hindering tooth development. After the initial exam, we will talk with you about your child’s oral health and make recommendations about any follow-up treatment needed.

We work hard to try and make your child’s first visit with us as easy and enjoyable as possible! It is our goal to dispel any fears or anxiety and leave them looking forward to their next visit to Smile Shoppe Pediatric Dentistry.
